British Expat Guide is reader-supported. When you click a link on the Site and complete a qualifying action - typically a purchase or sign-up on the destination retailer’s website - we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
This disclosure explains how that works, the programmes we participate in, and the editorial firewall between our commercial relationships and our editorial coverage.
1. How we make money
The Site is funded primarily through affiliate commissions. We do not sell products directly, we do not run display advertising, and we do not accept payment in exchange for editorial coverage.
We participate in a number of affiliate programmes, including but not limited to:
- Amazon Services LLC Associates Programme - an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon and affiliated retailers.
- Direct affiliate partnerships with services we cover in the Services Directory - including providers in the VPN, money transfer, expat banking, health insurance, removals, and pet transport categories. Examples include NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Wise, Cigna Global, Allianz Care, and SafetyWing.
- Affiliate networks such as Awin, Impact, and ShareASale, which manage commercial relationships between us and a broader range of retailers.
The commissions we earn fund the research, writing, and ongoing maintenance of the Site. Pricing on the destination retailer’s website is never affected by an affiliate click - you pay the same as anyone else.
2. Editorial independence
Our affiliate relationships do not influence the editorial coverage on the Site. Specifically:
- We rank and recommend services on merit. The Editor’s Pick badge in our Services Directory goes to the best option in each category based on coverage, pricing, reputation, and real-world testing - not to the highest-paying affiliate.
- We do not pull negative reviews. When a service we link to has flaws, we say so. Cons sections in our country and service guides are not shorter than pros sections.
- We do not accept payment for editorial coverage. We will never publish a country guide, editorial feature, or service review in exchange for a fee. Sponsored placements, where they exist, are clearly labelled in the same paragraph in which they appear.
- We disclose commercial relationships up-front. Every affiliate post carries a disclosure box at the top stating that the piece contains affiliate links.
3. How to identify affiliate links
Most outbound links on the Site that point to a service or retailer are affiliate links - particularly on the Services Directory, in affiliate-comparison posts (clearly marked as such), and in editorial features that recommend specific products.
We use a /go/[slug] redirect for affiliate links so that tracking parameters live on our domain rather than visible in the link URL. You can hover over any “Visit” button or outbound link to confirm the destination before clicking. Clicking an affiliate link never costs you anything - the commission is paid by the retailer out of their existing margin.
4. Why we use affiliate links
Affiliate revenue is the model that lets us write honest, in-depth content without putting it behind a paywall, without selling advertising, and without selling reader data. It also means we sometimes earn money when we recommend a service we think is worth paying for - which is fine, provided the recommendation is honest. That’s the test we hold ourselves to.
If you find our content useful, the best way to support the Site is to use our links when you sign up to a service we’ve recommended. It costs you nothing extra and helps fund the next country guide.
5. Operator
The Site is operated by What’s On Digital Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 09989363).
